2017 Cadillac ATS: The Class Leader Others Didn’t See Coming
There’s no way an American company can build a luxury car as well as a European one, right? Of course not, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been the class of the luxury market for generations and don’t seem to be ready to move over. Besides, isn’t Cadillac the brand for older generations to give them a vehicle that’s similar in size and drive to the hearse they will be shuffled off in once they pass on? If that’s your impression of Cadillac, it’s time to wake up and take a look at a brand that has redefined itself and has taken over the market.
The Cadillac ATS has taken over the luxury market for the compact performance market and has the BMW 3 shaking in its boots. This is a car that offers performance up and down the lineup and tops it off at the ATS-V which is not only equivalent to the BMW M3, its superior. With the ATS-V you will have a track ready car that can take on many of the sports cars that come to the track and leave them in the dust. All this performance comes in a package that’s built to impress with a sophisticated look and a cabin full of amazing features that are perfect for your driving excitement.
When the Cadillac team looked at how they could improve this car, they left it mostly the way it was last year. There’s no reason to go changing a good thing and most of the 2017 upgrades are cosmetic in nature. There is a new standard engine and a revised instrument cluster for all models as well as an updated CUE infotainment system that adds the Teen Driver feature and the Cadillac Collection to give you even more from this already amazing system.
This is a car you can easily get excited about from every engine aspect. The base engine is now a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder, which doesn’t sound like much, but this does give you 272 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic to give you great shift points and a fantastic drive in either RWD or AWD. The mid-range engine is the 3.6-lliter V6 which offers 333 horsepower and 285 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine only uses the eight-speed automatic transmission for shifting. For both of these engines you can get away with only using regular unleaded gasoline, which makes for a significant savings at the pump.
At the top of the lineup the ATS-V shows up with a 3.6-liter twin turbocharged V6 engine that can produce as much as 464 horsepower and 445 lb.-ft. of torque to make this car scream around the track. This engine is able to use either the six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission and does require premium gasoline, but when you have the performance you want in a car that’s ready to hit the track you won’t mind giving it the better fuel.
How much would you think a performance luxury car should cost? If you think the car should come in at over $50,000 to start the ATS will certainly surprise you with its starting price of only $35,600. The Coupe begins at a little less than $38,600 and the loaded version that isn’t the ATS-V can reach up past the $50,000 mark, but brings with it a plethora of great equipment for you to enjoy. The ATS-V does start out at $61,760 for the sedan and $64,900 for the coupe but can easily reach into the $70,000 range with some of the added performance features you’ll want on this car.
What you will enjoy on the ATS, other than just the performance, is the full suite of equipment this car brings to you. The ATS comes with dual zone climate controls, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, a seven-speaker Bose premium audio system, USB and auxiliary ports, a rearview camera, Brembo performance front brakes, 18-inch wheels, magnetic ride-control suspension, a five-mode traction management system and the trial offer of the OnStar system. Add equipment to this beauty and you could improve the ATS with leather upholstery, power front seats, several driver assistance features, automatic front and rear emergency braking and much more. This is the car you want to drive and show off as the exciting and amazing new ATS from Cadillac.
