05.08.17 - Road Trip

When you’re ready to head out on the road and want to explore the country you need to make sure your vehicle is prepared for the road trip you have in mind. If your vehicle breaks down close to home you most likely have family and friends that can help you out, but if you end up miles from home you’re going to have a problem. The best way you can make sure your vehicle won’t fail you on the road is to make sure you have checked everything and done the maintenance needed to make sure your car is ready to head out on the road.

Here are a few items to make sure your vehicle will be properly prepared to be out on the road when it’s time to take a road trip:

Fluids – As the lifeblood of your vehicle you need to make sure the fluids are right for you and are taken care of before you head out on the road. Check these fluids before you leave for your road trip.

Oil – Make sure check this and change this when you need to so that you don’t leave your engine without the protection it needs on the road. Change your oil as recommended or every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

Radiator Fluid – This fluid is meant to keep your engine cool and gives you the ability to maintain the right temperature of your engine. Flush this system every 50,000 miles and top off your fluid as needed.

Brake Fluid – This is one of the least thought about fluids in your vehicle, but it’s one of the most important because the fluid is compressed to make your brakes work. Top off the fluid and flush the system every 36,000 miles.

Power Steering Fluid – This is a fluid that helps make sure your power steering system continues to operate perfectly. Top it off and make sure it doesn’t become contaminated to make sure this system works right for you.

Transmission Fluid – This is a fluid that needs to be changed at 60,000 miles and after you reach 100,000 miles on your vehicle. Have this checked before you head out on the road and you’ll avoid the problem of a transmission breakdown.

Windshield Washer Fluid – This is one of the most important on a road trip because you never know when you’re going to run into the dirt or rain on your windshield. Make sure this fluid is full and check it whenever you stop for gas if you’ve used any along your route.

Tires – Tires are extremely important and having them perform for you on the road makes a huge difference in the enjoyment of your road trip. Here are some things to consider regarding your tires before you head out.

Air Pressure – Before every road trip you need to check for proper inflation and during the trip you should check it periodically. Normally this is something you should check at least once a month anyway.

Rotation – Your tires should be rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles to make sure they wear right and stay balanced. If you haven’t had them rotated in a while there’s a good chance your tires are not wearing the way you need them to, have these checked.

Replacement – There are times when you need to have your tires replaced. Don’t head out on a long road trip on tires that are close to this need, go ahead and have your tires replaced before you go, the extra grip will come in handy.

General Maintenance – There are a few other items that need to be taken care of that don’t fall into the fluids or the tires category to make sure you have your vehicle prepared for the road trip you have ahead of you.

Brake Pads – Have these checked at the before the road trip maintenance appointment and make sure your brakes are going to work perfectly for you. These pads can typically last between 25,000 and 70,000 miles.

Air Filters – You don’t want dust and debris in your engine. Make sure you change your air filter every 12,000 miles and just before a road trip is a great time to make sure this item is going to be clean and functional for you.

Light Bulbs – Check your headlights, taillights, turn signals and even the lights inside to make sure all the bulbs are working. Check the light over your license plate as well to ensure your plate number can be read easily.

Take care of these maintenance items before you head out on the road and you’re going to have the right way to enjoy a ride and have the road trip you’ve been looking to enjoy.
