The Torque Numbers You Want to Love
In what list would you ever have a Pagani Huayra and a Chevrolet Spark? Not very many at all, but this list is different than most. While we all love to talk about the horsepower a car has the torque is just as important and in some cases more important than the horsepower. With that in mind how many cars will bring you more torque than horsepower? Only a few will bring you numbers that are higher for the twist than for the forward grunt, but this list shows you those cars and the fact you can find a car in many categories that offers the drivability torque provides.
Pagani Huayra – Using a 6.0-liter twin turbocharged V12 this car is one of the most exclusive cars ever built. At a price of over $1 million per car the Huayra is a car that most of us will only ever look at and admire in pictures instead of driving. This is certainly a car that fits the bill of having more torque than horsepower as it comes in with 720 ponies and 738 lb.-ft. of twist to make it one of the most impressive cars ever built.
Cadillac ATS – The small sedan from Cadillac is the car that embraces the Alpha platform that this car has been built on. Using the high strength steel and aluminum for the chassis this is a car that enjoys being light on its feet. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is turbocharged to give you 272 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque to be a car that you can enjoy the power from very early in the rpm number. As a great little luxury sports sedan the ATS offers you a car that you will want to drive every single day.
Bentley Mulsanne Speed – When you already build some of the most exclusive and luxurious vehicles on the road it’s important to have a few trim levels to choose from. The Speed model has a power increase over the base (if you can call it that) model. This gives the Mulsanne Speed 530 horsepower and an insane 811 lb.-ft. of torque. That is more power than you will find on most full size trucks that are meant for the dirty work of hauling and pulling, not that you would want to grab your Mulsanne in order to get any work done, but it’s nice to know it could if you really had to.
BMW i8 – The i8 is currently the top model in the i-Series that is being offered as a balance of the electric propulsion systems and gasoline engines. As the most advanced sports car from BMW the i8 uses only three cylinders to give you 357 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque because most of the power comes out of the electric motors that are set up to give you the impressive power you want as soon as you step on the accelerator and get this car going down the road.
Chevrolet Spark EV – What is the Spark? This is a tiny hatchback that offers you only a small amount of horsepower no matter the setup. As a lightweight city car you don’t expect much at all from this car or any other that is built to this size. The Spark EV has only 140 horsepower but it does bring you a massively strong 400 lb.-ft. of torque which is more than the Ferrari 458 Speciale even though you would never put the Spark in the same class as the Ferrari. This car leads a trend toward more EV cars that we will enjoy on the market going forward.
Ford Mustang EcoBoost – When you think Mustang you immediately think of the 5.0-liter engine with eight cylinders that can blow the doors of anything else. That model is a lot of fun, but it doesn’t have more torque than horsepower. The model that does is the EcoBoost which makes use of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that brings in 310 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque. With this power under the hood this car can actually reach sixty mph in only 5.5 seconds with makes this Mustang a lot of fun to drive on any road.
Tesla Model S P90D – You do have to upgrade on the Model S in order to have a car that gives you the insane torque we are looking for, but that $10,000 addition to have the Ludicrous Speed option brings in 532 horsepower and 713 lb.-ft. of torque. Because this car has instant power you will be able to reach sixty mph in only 2.8 seconds, while others are left behind waiting for the gasoline powered engines to come up to power. Not only will you get the power you want right away, this car can take the whole family for a ride with its interesting third row of seats setup.
Mercedes-AMG S65 – A stunning exterior that offers gorgeous lines and ideally placed features this is a car that could have a hamster under the hood and you would want to drive it. The S65 does have several horses powering it at 621 and a torque number that comes in at 738 lb.-ft. of torque coming from the twin turbocharged V12. With all this power Mercedes has to provide the right control features which translates to more fun on the road or track for you as you handle the roads in the way you really want to in order to have a car that is at the height of its class.
Porsche 918 Spyder – As the top model ever built by Porsche for the public the 918 Spyder is a car that will blow your socks off and give you the power and drive you will admire. Using the 4.6-liter V8 engine and electric motors this car can make 887 horsepower and a massive 944 lb.-ft. of torque to give you a car that will run away and hide with how fast it reaches any number of speed marks.
