When Dependability Matters

04.15.16 - 2013 Lexus ES350

Dependability is not something to take lightly. Your car needs to be there for you and take you through the daily driving you encounter without any issues. When you have a car that breaks down on a regular basis you leave dependability in the wind and even getting to work can be a huge challenge for you. If you have decided 2016 is the year you will buy a dependable vehicle that will ensure you can get to and from work each and every day, here is the list from JD Power for you to consider making your own for this new year.

City Car – The Fiat 500 is the leader as the city car you should buy when your driving is confined to the cityscape around you. Even though you might think there are only a few city cars out there, that does not dispel the fact that this car makes it to the top of the list and gives you a comfortable ride in a car that gives you an Italian style and a great place to ride from. The only other city car to score above the industry average for the number of problems per 100 vehicles was the Smart ForTwo, but the Fiat 500 was the clear winner.

Small Car – Looking to something a little larger than the City Car the Small Car category was led by the Honda Fit. This small hatchback has been a favorite for a few years now and when you think of dependability the name Honda always comes to mind. Others that came close in this segment sere the Nissan Versa and the Hyundai Accent, both of which offer good driving manners and the right size, but the Fit was by far the favorite and had the least number of problems to be the segment winner.

Compact Cars – This is a segment full of awesome cars with names you easily recognize such as the Toyota Corolla, Prius and the Buick Verano. While Toyota is typically the name you know for dependability the leader for this category is the Buick Verano which was the best performer. Buick as a brand has come on strong as it ranks third for overall brands with 106 problems per 100 vehicles, finally giving a domestic automaker a name that ranks up with the stalwart leaders of Honda and Toyota when it comes to vehicles you can trust.

Compact Sporty Car – This may be another tiny segment with only a few entrants, but with the growing popularity of the hot hatch on the market this category has gained steam and is one that separates itself from some of the others. The Mini Cooper, Mini Coupe and Mini Roadster all reached the top of this category with the Volkswagen GTI chasing close on their heels. As a brand Mini did rank below the industry average, but these three names and variants of the Cooper all show us a car that is attractive, fun to drive and dependable.

Compact Premium Car – Having a category for premium cars includes those that are close to luxury as well as some that come from a luxury brand that might be an entry level vehicle for the brand. In this group the Lexus ES topped the list, which should come as no surprise since this is a luxury car that has Toyota as a parent company. Others that were close behind were the BMW 1 Series, Acura ILX and Audi A4 all of which fell just behind the Lexus ES which showed up as one of the most dependable vehicles you can ever find.

Midsized Car – If you have enjoyed the commercials where a group of people take a look at a car that has the badging removed only to learn the car is a Chevrolet Malibu you will love the fact the Malibu is the winner for dependability as well. This car edged out the Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry to be the choice more of us should make this year when we want a car that has plenty of great features and is a car that will never leave you stranded on the side of the road.

Midsized Sporty Car – Now we get into names that are more recognized as sports cars such as the Camaro and Mustang. The Camaro is the one that took the top honors for dependability in this segment, giving us a car that we will love driving at any model build. The Camaro won this category so easily that it was the only car that performed above the average for the industry and for this segment. If you think you want a sports car this year, check out the Camaro and enjoy a car that we have all loved for generations and you know you can trust to take you where you need to go.

Midsized Premium Car – Going a little higher in the category you find a wide variety of great luxury models to choose from, but for dependability Lexus takes the trophy again. The GS is the model that takes home the hardware, beating out the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to be the favorite. For those cars that you might expect to make an appearance that didn’t the Lincoln MKS and Infiniti M were not among those considered for this scoring. As you can see, Lexus has a dependable lineup to give you some of the best cars to choose.

Large Car – As I mentioned, Buick came in third overall for dependability as a brand which means you should expect a couple of their models to win some of these awards. The Buick LaCrosse is the winner in this category which means it beat out the Nissan Maxima and the Toyota Avalon. Does this mean we are looking at a new trend with a domestic brand being considered dependable? It certainly appears so, I’m sure we can expect the models that have won these awards in the past will come back charging hard next year to try and regain their crowns.
