Engine Options

Before we get to the breakdown of what exactly you can tow with a Ford Super Duty, let’s take a look at the different engines available. Each engine on the Ford Super Duty has a different power output, which means that your towing ability will also be affected. The first available engine is the 6.2-liter flex-fuel gas V8 engine. This engine makes 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. When equipped with a Ford F-250, this engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The next engine is the 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V8 engine, which makes 475 horsepower and an incredible 1,075 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission.

The final engine choice is a 7.3-liter gas V8 that makes 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. This engine is also paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission.

Towing Capacity

Now that you know the available engines, let’s take a look at the towing capacity of each one. The 7.3-liter gas V8 is capable of towing 21,000 pounds max in a conventional capacity. It can tow up to 21,200 for gooseneck or fifth-wheel towing.

The 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 is capable of towing 21,200 pounds conventionally, but it can tow up to 37,000 pounds with a gooseneck or fifth-wheel setup. As you will see, this is by far the largest towing capacity of the three engines.

The 6.2-liter gas V8 is capable of towing a maximum of 16,700 pounds regardless of whether you use a conventional or gooseneck/fifth-wheel setup.

Payload Capacity

Along with towing capacity, you might want to know how much your truck can haul before you make a decision on an engine or model option. Payload is the amount your truck can haul in the bed. The Ford F-350 has the highest payload capacity when equipped with 2WD and a regular cab layout. The payload capacity of the Ford F-250is 4,260 pounds. The max payload of the F-350 with the aforementioned specs is 7,850 pounds. The Ford F-450 can haul up to 6,210 pounds in its bed.
