Bridging the Gap: Introducing the CX-70 – Mazda’s Perfect Midsize Two-Row Crossover
The early days of Mazda brought thoughts of a luxury brand named Amati that never happened. Still, Mazda’s premium nature makes it to the new CX-70 SUV.
Over the past several years, Mazda has been creeping its way toward the luxury market with sensual body lines, sleek styling, and premium interior materials. Toss in the aggressive SkyActiv engines and impressive driving manners, and you’ve got a brand that makes driving more exciting and fun than most others. The new CX-70 is heading our way as a new midsize two-row crossover that will put a smile on the faces of many new owners.
The CX-70 fits in the middle
Between the compact CX-50 and three-row CX-90 is a hole in the Mazda SUV lineup. This is the perfect place for the new CX-70 to fit right in. This new model gives Mazda customers an excellent option when looking for a two-row SUV with more roominess than what the CX-50 offers. Many auto brands offer several SUVs in similar classes, which makes it easy to see how this new Mazda could be successful.
Will this new Mazda go hybrid?
Although we’re still waiting for the new Mazda CX-70 to hit the market, the California Air Resource Board has confirmed this new SUV will be powered by the same three hybrid powertrains as its larger CX-90 sibling. This means two 3.3-liter hybrid models and one 2.5-liter PHEV. These three powertrains come with standard AWD and mate to an 8-speed automatic transmission to send power to the wheels. Because the powertrains are the same as what’s found in the larger SUV, we should expect the new CX-70 to be a little faster and quicker than its larger sibling.
What are the power figures of these systems?
The mild-hybrid powertrain gives us a 3.3-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque in the Turbo model. Step up to the Turbo S trim, and the power increases to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
When you opt for the smaller PHEV powertrain, you’ll have a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor. The electric motor produces 173 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque on its own. The total system output is 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. This PHEV system drives the CX-90 for 25 miles using only the electric power from the batteries. This figure should increase to at least 30 miles in the lighter CX-70.
Expected Mazda design elements
When something works well, there’s no reason to change it. The new Mazda CX-70 should wear the same Kodo design language that’s been present in the Mazda lineup for several years. This design language brings fluidity of motion to the automotive landscape. This sophisticated design enables the vehicle to appear to be in motion, even when it’s not.
The design language only gets better when you add the expected features of this new Mazda to the mix. This SUV should include an attractive set of LED headlights, a panoramic roof, a power tailgate, and rear privacy glass to keep the glaring sun out. There’s no denying the premium qualities Mazda brings to the market, giving us a lineup of great vehicles with upscale features and impressive materials to make it easy to enjoy a high-quality ride on any road.
Although we don’t know the full lineup of Mazda CX-70 colors yet, the three that we expect to see included are Rhodium White, Soul Red Crystal, and Machine Gray.
A two-row layout offers more cargo space
The new CX-70 should be larger than the CX-50, but smaller than the CX-90. The two-row setup means the new CX-70 will have ample cargo room for gear and plenty of space for rear-seat passengers to enjoy the drive and stretch their legs. The new CX-70 should be a little larger than the European CX-60, but not by much. The CX-60 has 20 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats, which should be about what we find in the new CX-70 when it arrives.
