Strong Midsize Pickup Contender
The Toyota Tacoma is all-new for 2024 and continues to be a strong contender in the midsize pickup segment. It offers eight trim levels, including the TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road. The TRD Sport is a more conservative take on the hardcore TRD Off-Road. We take a look at the TRD Sport as it’s a good option for those who want some performance upgrades, but don’t want all the bells and whistles of the Off-Road trim.
The TRD Sport lands close to the middle of the pack with a nice combination of utility, affordability, and decent off-road equipment. It’s likely to be one of the more popular trims for the Tacoma at Toyota dealerships. The new Tacoma doesn’t look all that much different from the previous model, but it does have a few new styling cues with an improved grille design.
The Tacoma TRD Sport is offered in various configurations and can be had with either a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder or an i-Force Max hybrid powertrain that makes 326 horsepower. You can choose from a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. The TRD Sport only comes in a double cab layout.
Agreeable Daily Driver
The Tacoma TRD Sport is a great option for an everyday driver. It’s fairly simple, nothing extreme or different, just a truck that does what it needs to do. Inside, all the controls are where you’d expect and the truck handles well on the pavement. Compared to the roughness of the previous model, this one feels smooth and completely modern.
The power delivery is responsive and sharp, even with the smaller engine that makes 278 horsepower. The transmission shifts smoothly and there’s almost no turbo lag. Similarly, braking is strong and smooth. Drivers will also notice the deep rumble of the four-cylinder, which belies its small size.
Even though the Toyota Tacoma is classified as a midsize truck, it drives bigger and it’s so tall that it easily towers over most other trucks and SUVs on the road. The high hood compromises the forward visibility somewhat, but you can fix that by opting for the 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor.
Balanced and Practical
A few things make the Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport appealing to the utility-minded truck owner. Compared to some other trucks, the TRD Sport is refreshingly basic and balanced. The interior upholstery is mainly cloth and black plastic with manual seats. It’s an interior that feels right whether you’re daily driving it or when you’re roughing it.
At the same time, there’s still plenty of modern tech like a 14-inch infotainment screen, heated front seats, and a backup camera. The front seats are quite comfortable, but the rear seats are a little less supportive and with less legroom.
The 4WD TRD Sport should run for about $44,095 with the automatic transmission at Toyota dealerships. You can drop the price slightly with a manual transmission, or the RWD version costs about $40,895.
